Vote No on 2 in Weymouth for Fox 25 Zip Trip!

On The Road Again!

This morning the Vote “NO” on 2 Campaign followed Fox 25 down to Weymouth for the stations very last Friday Zip Trip for the summer. Though we are sad the summer is winding down, we were thrilled to be able to talk to voters and local officials about the importance of protecting the affordable housing law for seniors and working families. As we launch into fall, we encourage everyone to contact the campaign to get a lawn sign or to find out other ways to help us save the affordable housing law. Weymouth is a great community and we were so happy to be a part of this morning’s event!

Our No on 2 coalition of supporters, including business, civic, religious, labor, academic, environmental and healthcare leaders, as well as municipal officials has grown to more than 1,000 individuals and organizations! According to our chairman, Tripp Jones, “our coalition is urging people to vote ‘no’ in order to protect the affordable housing law, which is the single most effective tool for creating affordable housing for the seniors and working families across our state. We are thrilled that so many people have come out to support our grassroots effort and have expressed that support by sending in small contributions from every part of the state.”

Assisted Living Center in Gardner Kicks Off

Governor Deval Patrick and Congressman John Olver celebrated the kick off of construction of an assisted living housing development in Gardner that uses the affordable houisng law. This development rehabilitates a long-vacant furniture making mill to provide homes for seniors.

"This project is an excellent example of how infrastructure investment creates jobs, as well as a foundation for further private sector growth," said Governor Patrick. "I thank Secretary Donovan and Congressman Olver for helping us secure funding for this project and so many projects like it across the Commonwealth. This is why Massachusetts is coming out of recession faster and stronger than the rest of the country, while remaining true to our values."

Repealing the affordable housing law would prevent the rehabilitation of buildings like this mill into affordable housing in towns across the Commonwealth, hurting seniors and working families who need it. Vote No on 2 in November!

Last week the Massachusetts ALF-CIO endorsed the Vote No on 2 campaign! We're excited to have them on board, joining SEIU 615 as unions that have endorsed the campaign. Many employees represented by both AFL-CIO and SEIU qualify for and live in affordable housing units. Repealing the affordable housing law would hurt them among other working families and seniors. Vote No on 2!

If you're wondering what impact the affordable housing law has had in building affordable housing in Massachusetts, take a look at our new interactive history of the law. This animated map shows the homes that would never have been built without the affordable housing law. There's no question that the affordable housing law is the primary tool for building affordable housing in Massachusetts, and without it, there would be almost no new affordable housing built in many communities across the Commonwealth.
This month's AARP Bulletin takes a look at how AARP Massachusetts is fighting to protect affordable housing in the Bay State. Housing is the single largest expense for older households, and the cost is a particularly serious problem for those who rent.
“Repealing the affordable housing law will move Massachusetts in the wrong direction,” said AARP Massachusetts State Director Deborah Banda. “Instead of backtracking, let’s look for ways to protect affordable housing options – and help elder homeowners remain independent in their own homes and communities.”
AARP is one of many organizations working to protect the affordable housing law from being repealed on the ballot in November. Visit the Who We Are section to learn more about who is supporting the Vote NO on 2 campaign.

Affordable Housing Repeal Initiative Receives Signatures for November Ballot

Secretary Galvin officially confirmed today that a question to repeal the state’s affordable housing law will be on the November ballot. This is a dangerous and reckless attempt to repeal the state’s primary tool for creating affordable housing for seniors and working families. This law has been responsible for 80% of the new affordable housing created in the state over the past decade, outside the major cities -- 12,000 units of affordable housing in the pipeline as well as the construction jobs that go with them would be lost if this law is repealed. Also, almost half of all of the affordable units created using this law were developed by non-profit organizations, like Habitat for Humanity, and by local housing groups. We have a broad-based, grassroots, coalition of 300 individuals and organizations in place, who are all in favor of protecting this law. Our coalition includes civic, business, religious, and academic leaders as well as senior, environmental, housing, and civil rights groups. All three candidates for Governor also oppose the repeal. We hope you will join us in our fight to protect the affordable housing law!

Wanted: More Affordable Housing!

This week, the US Census announced that Massachusetts has built fewer homes than 44 states over the last decade. This has led to a severe deficiency in housing supply compared to the high demand to live and work in the Bay State. The supply-demand mismatch has contributed to unaffordable home prices, causing working families to relocate to other states where homes are less expensive. And without the homes built through the Affordable Housing Law, we’d be in far worse shape.

The consequences of too few housing opportunities are severe; fewer people calling Massachusetts “home” means less federal funding for roads and schools, and less Congressional Representatives fighting for our state. We need to continue to create affordable homes for working families to keep our young people from leaving. This is just one more reason to vote NO against repealing the Massachusetts Affordable Housing Law in November.

A big thanks to Ellen Feingold, the Campaign's Treasurer, for her lifelong dedication to affordable housing. Her work with the Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly (JCHE) has made a tremendous difference in people's lives across the Commonwealth. Thankfully, her work does not end with her retirement from JCHE as she continues to work to protect the affordable housing law from being repealed on the ballot in November. Thank you for all the work you do, Ellen!
